Connecticut Interstate 291 - Greater Hartford Beltway

This is a current map of the area where Interstate 291 - The Greater Hartford Beltway - was to exist south and west of Hartford Connecticut. The map itself was taken from Terraserver, pieced together from 12 tiled pictures using ImageMagick. The picture was taken in 1992.

  • Red lines indicate current freeways, I84, I91, CT9, US5/CT15, CT3.
  • Orange lines indicate major non-freeway routes
  • The yellow line indicates freeways that were built in the 60's, but not used util the CT 9 realignment in 1992. These are currently in use.
  • Green lines indicate highways and ramps that were built in the 60's, but have never been used or completed. The bridge from I91N to 291 (lowest and rightmost green line) was removed in the late 90's when more lanes were added to I91. Note 4-level stack interchange for CT 9 and I-84 in upper left, still standing today, only partially used.
  • The blue area is the I-291 right-of-way, never used for roads. There appears to be some business and residential use of this land now. The CT DOT headquarters is located at the juction of this area and US5/CT15, the Berlin Turnpike.
  • Also note that the portion of CT 9 from the fork at the bottom left of the photo to the exit near Central Connecticut State University (where the line goes from red to yellow) was originally the Taras Shevchenko Expressway, south and west of the fork it was CT 72.
